Engaging Thai citizens with games and open platforms
abstract
With the thinking that the Friedrich Naumann Foundation is the creative innovation platform for the promotion of freedom, its office in Thailand (FNF Thailand) has developed games and open platforms to engage citizens since 2010.
Sim Democracy was our first board game to simulate a simple democratic community. The game has been implemented with the aim to provide better understanding of the basic democratic values and processes with the ultimate goal to stimulate political and public opinions and to raise questions on government administration and other issues, to encourage culture of political debates and thereby increasing realisation of active civil participation and foster interest in public affairs. The game has been translated in different languages.
With the success of Sim Democracy, FNF Thailand was asked by many leading institutions to develop more games. In 2016, we developed Rights Card and Bingo Rights game based on the Declaration of Human Rights, targeting primary school; Media Literacy card game in 2017; and PeaceSoCracy conflict management game in 2018. Local election game and virtual citizen online games are underway.
Since 2012 ‘Dream Thailand’ a branded campaign based on ‘future search’ methodology provides platform for people to voice out their dreams for the country. The findings were presented to the country’s policy makers. Recently in 2020, an online survey with 1,880 people about their wishes for Thailand in post-COVID19 was conducted and the data was made available for the policy makers and media to access.
Dr. Pimrapaat Dusadeeisariyakul is known for an innovative idea to provide social innovation. Since 2011, she has been developing games to engage with Thai citizens.
